Deck Lighting Ideas: 8 Ways to Light Your Outdoor Space

Deck lighting extends your outdoor living season by 3-4 hours every evening and adds a safety layer for stairs and elevation changes. We wire lighting into about 70% of the decks we build now. Here are the 8 options we install most, with real costs from recent Lehigh Valley projects.

1. Post cap lights

Cost: $30-$80 per cap. These sit on top of your railing posts and cast a soft downward glow. Solar versions exist but burn out faster in PA winters. We recommend low-voltage LED caps wired into a transformer. They turn on automatically at dusk and last 50,000+ hours.

2. Under-rail LED strips

Cost: $15-$25 per linear foot installed.LED strip lights mounted underneath the top rail create an ambient glow without visible fixtures. This is the most popular option on our Allentown and Bethlehem builds. The light illuminates the deck surface without glaring into anyone's eyes.

3. Stair riser lights

Cost: $20-$40 per light.Small recessed fixtures in each stair riser. These are a safety feature first and an aesthetic feature second. PA building inspectors appreciate them (though they're not required by code). We install these on every elevated deck with 4+ stairs.

4. Recessed deck board lights

Cost: $25-$50 per light.Flush-mounted into the deck surface, these create a runway-style effect along walkways or around the perimeter. They're low profile and won't catch on furniture. Best installed during the build since retrofitting requires cutting into existing boards.

5. Step tread lights

Cost: $15-$30 per light. Mounted on the face of each step, shining downward. A simpler alternative to riser lights. Good for retrofitting onto existing decks since they surface-mount rather than recess.

6. Pergola string lights

Cost: $3-$8 per foot of string.Commercial-grade LED string lights draped across a pergola or between posts create a warm, casual atmosphere. We install heavy-duty hooks and guide wires so the strings don't sag. This is the most affordable way to light a large deck area.

7. Under-deck soffit lighting

Cost: $20-$40 per linear foot. For second-story decks, recessed lights in the underside of the deck frame illuminate the patio below. This makes the space under your deck usable at night and adds a finished look. We pair this with under-deck drainage systems on most elevated builds in Easton and Nazareth.

8. Landscape spotlights (aimed at the deck)

Cost: $50-$100 per fixture.Low-voltage spotlights in the garden beds below, angled up to wash the deck and railing with light. This creates dramatic shadows and highlights the deck's architecture. Works especially well on multi-level decks.

What we recommend for most homeowners

A combination of post cap lights + stair riser lights + one accent element (under-rail strips or string lights) covers safety, ambiance, and function. Budget $800-$2,000 for a typical 300 sq ft deck. All our lighting runs on a single low-voltage transformer with a timer or smart switch.
