PA building code requirements
Before we talk materials, here's what the residential code Pennsylvania adopts (IRC section R312 and the guard load in Table R301.5) requires for any deck 30 inches or more above grade:
- Minimum height: 36 inches for residential decks (42 inches for commercial)
- Baluster spacing: No gap wider than 4 inches (a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through)
- Load rating: Must withstand 200 lbs of force applied in any direction at the top rail

What we recommend most often
For most Lehigh Valley homeowners, aluminum railing with composite posts gives you the best combination of clean looks, zero maintenance, and reasonable cost. The aluminum balusters stay straight (composite balusters can bow slightly in direct sun), and the composite posts match your deck boards.
If you have a view you want to preserve (overlooking a yard, pool, or the Poconos landscape), cable or glass railings open up the sightlines. Cable is the more practical choice since glass shows fingerprints and water spots constantly.
What to avoid
- Pressure-treated wood railings on a composite deck defeats the purpose of low maintenance. The railing will need staining while the deck boards don't.
- Bottom-mounted post brackets on high decks can fail under lateral load. We always recommend through-bolt mounting for any deck over 4 feet high.
- Horizontal cable on properties with small children since kids can climb horizontal cables like a ladder. Check with your township, some municipalities restrict them.
